A new grammar rule devised by the European Union in Brussels stipulates the word "Christ" shall be spelled with a lowercase "c."

The rule was part of an orthography reform published in October, reported Canada Free Press.

The paper cites a German newssite, Kath.net, in reporting that the new guidelines also indicate the Dutch word for "Jews" (Joden) is to be spelled with a capital "J" when referring to nationality and with a lower-case "j" when referring to the religion.

The EU changes become mandatory next August. There are no penalties set out for those who insist on continuing to spell Christ with a capital "C."

Canada Free Press noted the title of Javier Solana, secretary general of the EU, was still to be spelled with capital letters.

Many Europeans have long discarded belief in God and in fact believe more deeply in ghosts than in a deity.

A new poll finds two-thirds of Britons said they believe in the existence of ghosts and spirits, but only 55 percent said they believe in the existence of God.

Meanwhile, 26 percent believe in UFOs, 19 percent in reincarnation and 4 percent in the Loch Ness Monster, Ananova reported.

--end article--

I find it interesting that 4 percent believe in Nessie, and 26 percent believe in UFOs. This must mean that UFOs are 6.5 times more likely reality than that poor lake lizard. Right?

And if you're born a Jew in the EU, and you convert to Christianity, Hinduism, Atheism or Scientology, you're still a Jew, because it's a label that is now immovable. Not "of Hebrew descent". Just Jew. Hindu Jew. Or my favorite: "jew Jew." If you are a jewish Jew, then you are a "jew Jew". Like "christian Indian." But only in Dutch. Fill out an application for whatever and now it's "white", "black", "asian", "Joden". Lowercase christ. Of course, toss out grammer, and that whole "capitalizing names and titles" rule. Can't wait until Webster catches up with those Euro Gurus.

M-W.com:

Main Entry: Christ
Pronunciation: 'krIst
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English Crist, from Old English, from Latin Christus, from Greek Christos, literally, anointed, from chriein
1 : MESSIAH
2 : JESUS
3 : an ideal type of humanity
4 Christian Science : the ideal truth that comes as a divine manifestation of God to destroy incarnate error
- Christ·like /-"lIk/ adjective
- Christ·ly /-lE/ adjective

It even corrects it when you type it with a lowercase "c". And how dare it define "Christ" as "an ideal type of humanity." I guess Webster must be a crock... which means that all the words in it must be a crock... which means that vocabulary as a whole is a crock... and this ridiculous article is a crock, and these sentences don't even exist in any justifiable sense. *whew* Glad I'm openminded enough to think abstractly, or all this literal-ness would undefine everything I perceive. Funny how abstract thought brings a person back to reality... but that just couldn't make any sense, could it?
